ISO 9000 certification and the bottom line: a comparative study of the profitability of Basque region companies

Managerial Auditing Journal

Research comparing the performance of ISO 9000 certified companies to those uncertified companies in the Basque region of Spain certified concluded that ‘the average profitability of the certified firms is superior’.

The research was carried out by comparing the audited financial performance of 400 ISO 9000 certified companies against and 400 non-certified companies over a five year period.

ISO 9000 certification and the bottom line: a comparative study of the profitability of Basque region companies (Heras, Casadesús, Dick, 2002) found a return of assets employed that is between 24% and 45% higher in certified than in non-certified companies.’ The research does not look to suggest a causal link from ISO 9000 certification to greater comparative profitability, but the ‘findings provide objective proof of an association between ISO 9000 certification and superior financial performance’.
